Don't ask my why he's considered the chief. If you listen to WPOC, he basically reads the National Weather Service forecast and even credits them. My personal opinion is you should know what you're talking about if that is your job.

You wouldn't let a guy operate on you after reading a "how-to" book. Even if he did stay at a Holiday Inn Express...

Why would Marty Ass be considered a chief meteorologist. He isnt licensed. Plus he doesnt always get the weather right. Which is why he gets the lowest rating. And thats exactly why I do not watch Marty. Mostly I watch the weather channel and if I have to watch the local station Im mostly watching Tom Tasselmyer. Not Farty Ass.

Christian,
While we can't say 100% that there won't be a hurricane in Philly... the chances are slim. Historically, the effects of a hurricane have been felt in the Philly area every other year or so. I'll have to do some research when the last time the area took a direct hit. If you see Joe Roy's article about CT getting hit by a hurricane, you can pretty much equate that to Philly.

Thanks for the message!

Thanks for commenting Gary. I agree with your statements with regards to a large amplitude prediction for sunpot cycle 24. Looks like it's in jeopardy of not happening however. The last graph there is one in which I made myself using the latest data from the website: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/SOLAR/ftpsunspotnumber.html#hoyt

One would have to think that the later in time the sunspots start occuring in cycle 24, the less the magnitude of the maximum will likely be in 2012/2013.

I have calculated a yearly average with the data and have plotted it as a jpeg if you would like to see the graph out to 2014. Let me know if you would like me to send it you.

25 spotless days in a row and counting...

Thanks for the posting on the unpredicted lack of sunspots for Cycle 24.

The second graph of predicted vs current must be a very new revision because the original 2006 prediction for Cycle 24 was for a much larger number than Cycle 23.

As the statisticians note:

"If you can't predict accurately, predict frequently."

The original May 2006 prediction is at

http://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/papers/hathadh/HathawayWilson2006.pdf

Hathaway, the guru of sunspots was predicting with assurance:

"Geomagnetic activity indicates large amplitude for sunspot cycle 24"

The original Cycle 24 graph showing a large increase has been consigned to the "memory hole".

WeatherBug itself wasn't spyware... Unfortunately they teamed with an ad company that was malicious spyware and they didn't know it. You'd be surprised how many people ask that same question. People don't forget.

That being said... I assure you that nothing like that is going on now. We can't afford to damage our reputation.

When weatherbug first come out, wasn't it considered spyware? Or was that just a fake alternative going aroudn infecting peoples PCs?

Other then that you mentioned that nobody really listens to the Chief Meteorologist on t.v. What I hear people saying about that is the news stations are too desperate to get the info out fast, thus causing them to lose accuracy (not sure how accurate that is). Other then that the t.v. is a dieing medium and everyone resorts to the internet or logging onto their twitter or other social networking through their phones while they are on the go.

Good writing though. I enjoyed the article.
